Maple Finance Surpasses Rivals as Second-Largest Crypto Lender
Maple Finance has quietly risen to become the second-largest institutional crypto lender globally, trailing only Tether. This resurgence comes after the platform underwent a significant transformation following the 2022 credit blowup, where it rebuilt itself into a secured, overcollateralized lending model.
The platform currently manages active loans worth around $1.9 billion, with total value locked ranging between $2.4 billion and $5 billion depending on how assets are counted under management. Since its inception, Maple has originated between $15 billion and $22 billion in cumulative loans, boasting a repayment rate exceeding 99% and no reported losses on overcollateralized positions.
Maple's CEO, Sid Powell, made a deliberate pivot away from trust-based lending toward secured, overcollateralized positions after the firm was exposed to uncollateralized lending. This strategic shift has paid off, with Maple now attracting professional counterparties who need capital for operations.
