MARA Abandons Bitcoin Mining for AI Data Centers
MARA Holdings is shifting its focus from Bitcoin mining to building AI data centers. The company's CEO, Fred Thiel, announced this strategic pivot due to the higher revenue potential of AI workloads compared to mining.
The move involves partnering with Starwood Capital to convert existing mining sites into AI infrastructure. MARA aims to initially target 1 GW of capacity and scale up to 2.5 GW or more in the future.
This transition is driven by the desire for more stable, long-term revenue streams through enterprise contracts, which contrast with the volatility of Bitcoin mining profits.
