MARA Holdings CEO: AI Data Centers Outperform Bitcoin Mining in Revenue
MARA Holdings' Chief Executive Fred Thiel has made some significant comments about Bitcoin's limitations and his company's approach to cryptocurrency mining. MARA, one of the world's largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining companies, currently operates over 4 gigawatts of energy capacity.
This infrastructure is not only used for Bitcoin mining but also provides flexibility for converting into AI data centers as demand grows. Thiel emphasized that the company can continue to mine Bitcoin at its existing facilities while retaining the option to convert its infrastructure in the future.
Thiel also clarified MARA's approach to holding Bitcoin, stating that it is not a digital asset treasury company but rather part of its broader cash management strategy. He mentioned that the company sold about 20,000 Bitcoin and used the proceeds to repurchase outstanding bonds at a discount and reduce debt.
The move was seen as balance sheet management rather than a shift away from Bitcoin. Despite maintaining confidence in the cryptocurrency, Thiel pointed out that Bitcoin's inability to generate yield remains its biggest limitation as an asset.
