Marathon Digital Dumps 23K Bitcoins for $1.6B
Marathon Digital Holdings, the publicly traded Bitcoin mining giant formerly known as Marathon Digital, has sold a significant portion of its Bitcoin holdings in the first half of 2026. The company offloaded roughly 23,093 BTC during this period, generating approximately $1.6 billion in cash.
The sale was a strategic move for MARA, allowing it to manage convertible note debts and fund expansion into energy and AI infrastructure. This pivot marks a shift from the company's previous 'purely accumulation-focused approach' to a more balanced method of utilizing its Bitcoin treasury.
A single transaction in March 2026 accounted for a large portion of the selling, with MARA selling 15,133 BTC for approximately $1.1 billion. The remaining sales through Q1 and Q2 brought the total to 23,093 BTC, generating the $1.6 billion in aggregate proceeds.
