MARATHON Digital Sells $1.6B in Bitcoin Amid Shift in Strategy
MARATHON Digital Holdings, formerly known as Marathon Digital, has been shedding its Bitcoin stash in the first half of 2026. The company sold off roughly 23,093 BTC, generating approximately $1.6 billion in cash.
The single largest transaction took place in March 2026, where MARA sold 15,133 BTC for around $1.1 billion. This sale was part of a pivot from what the company calls a 'purely accumulation-focused approach' to a more balanced strategy that involves selling coins to manage debt and fund expansion into energy and AI infrastructure.
The remaining sales throughout Q1 and Q2 brought the total to 23,093 BTC, bringing in $1.6 billion in aggregate proceeds. MARA still holds 35,577 BTC as of June 30, valued at around $2.1 billion based on a spot price near $58,524.
In addition to selling Bitcoin, MARA also expanded its operational hashrate to 70.3 EH/s by extracting an extra 2,422 BTC during Q2 2026 alone.
