Marathon Taps Landfill Methane to Power Small-Scale Bitcoin Mining Operation
Marathon Digital has launched a small pilot project in Utah that uses landfill methane gas to power Bitcoin mining. The facility, built with Nodal Power, is a 280 kW operation with reported uptime of 92% and power costs around $0.03 per kWh.
The project is not massive, but it's an interesting example of where mining infrastructure may be heading. By using off-grid landfill gas to generate electricity for Bitcoin mining, Marathon is testing whether waste methane can be turned into a low-cost power source.
This kind of energy story is exactly what Bitcoin miners need more of, especially as political and environmental scrutiny around mining continues.
