The concept of using markets to govern companies is not new, dating back to Robin Hanson's original futarchy design in 2000. In this system, citizens define the objective and markets select the policy expected to improve it.

Experimental corporate implementations at Hewlett-Packard, Google, and Ford demonstrated that small internal markets can aggregate information dispersed across an organization, outperforming expert forecasts by up to 25% in mean-squared-error terms. However, researchers could not establish whether operating a market improves the underlying projects.

MetaDAO has taken futarchy from paper design to executable on-chain governance, using conditional pass and fail markets to direct treasury spending, token issuance, liquidity, and legal changes. Since November 2023, MetaDAO has reported 96 proposals across 14 organizations, with $45.4 million of cumulative capital raised.

Umia is another venture that combines fundraising, treasury controls, and decision markets within one structure. Its Tailored Auction uses Uniswap's Continuous Clearing Auction, while Umia built the surrounding launch logic, conditional markets, multiplex liquidity, and governance execution. Founders retain day-to-day operating authority within a monthly allowance, while markets govern larger spending, issuance, strategic changes, and liquidation.

Umia uses its Early Bid to shape the initial holder base, giving earlier access to participants with relevant governance, allocation, or builder history. By September 8, Umia had completed its public testnet and launched UMIA on Base, reaching its $6.2M USDC funding target and 18M FDV within minutes of bidding opening.
