Market Makers Build Massive Short Positions Amid Crypto Rally
Crypto market makers are building massive short positions in Hyperliquid as digital assets continue to rally. This has led to a growing divide over what this positioning means for the market.
Wintermute, one of the globe's largest digital asset liquidity providers, holds $190.8 million in short positions on Hyperliquid, spread across major cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum ($53 million), Bitcoin ($30.7 million), Solana ($22.6 million), HYPE ($11.4 million), and XRP ($10.2 million).
Abraxas Capital has also reported acquiring $783 million in positions after withdrawing $173 million in ETH from Binance, adding to the significant short exposure on Hyperliquid.
The large short positions have led to differing interpretations among market observers, with some viewing them as a sign of bearish expectations and others seeing them as hedging strategies rather than direct bets on a market fall.
