Massachusetts Senate Votes to Ban Crypto ATMs Amid Scam Epidemic
The Massachusetts Senate has voted to ban cryptocurrency ATMs in the state after residents lost nearly $6.8 million to kiosk-based scams in 2025 alone.
Jen Benson, state director of AARP Massachusetts, said that 'a ban on crypto ATMs is now the most effective way to stop the ongoing damage.'
The ban would make Massachusetts the latest state to impose strict controls on cryptocurrency kiosks, following in the footsteps of Vermont, Minnesota, Indiana, and Tennessee.
Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott described a typical fraud scenario: a victim receives a phone call or text message from someone posing as a bank representative, government official, or tech support agent. The caller pressures the target to move savings into cryptocurrency, then walks them step by step to a nearby kiosk.
