Mastercard Acquires BVNK in $1.8 Billion Stablecoin Infrastructure Deal
Mastercard has finalized its acquisition of London-based stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK for $1.8 billion, including a $1.5 billion base price and a $300 million earnout.
The deal marks a significant shift in the way major financial institutions approach stablecoins, with Mastercard betting that proprietary infrastructure is no longer just a peripheral experiment but a core competitive moat.
BVNKNK was founded in 2021 and processes around $30 billion in annualized stablecoin payment volume across 200 countries and territories.
The company's technology will be integrated into Mastercard's Multi-Token Network, designed for institutional settlement and treasury flows.
Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer at Mastercard, said that digital currencies, particularly stablecoins, are increasingly addressing real-world needs in areas like cross-border B2B payments, remittances, payouts, settlement, and treasury flows.
