MasterCard Acquires Stablecoin Firm BVNK for $1.8 Billion
The MasterCard acquisition of BVNK for $1.8 billion marks a significant milestone in the growth of stablecoin infrastructure, according to an interview with Concentric's founding partner Kjartan Rist.
BVNK, a London-based stablecoin company, was valued at just $4 million when Concentric backed it in 2019 after being introduced by a CEO they had previously supported. Rist described the founders as 'hungry' and 'relentless' serial entrepreneurs from South Africa who were yet to build businesses outside their home country.
The acquisition comes amidst intense competition for stablecoin infrastructure, with Stripe's $1.1 billion deal for Bridge in 2024 putting pressure on VISA and MasterCard to secure their own positions in the market. Despite Coinbase reportedly offering as much as $2.5 billion for BVNK, the deal ultimately went to MasterCard due to cultural fit and chemistry.
Rist noted that the distinction between Coinbase's primarily crypto-exchange business model and MasterCard's financial services background made a significant difference in the negotiations. He also mentioned that VISA had been involved in discussions with BVNK but chose not to pursue an acquisition, opting instead for partnerships with multiple operators.
