Mastercard and Borderless Pilot Cross-Border Stablecoin Payments with Assurance Signals
Mastercard is working on a pilot project with stablecoin orchestration network Borderless to improve cross-border stablecoin payments. The trial aims to test whether Mastercard's Crypto Credential standards-based framework can generate assurance signals that market participants can use in their approval, compliance, and risk workflows.
The partnership will focus on the credential layer, not payment execution. Mastercard will not process or settle funds as part of the pilot. Borderless CEO Kevin Lehtiniitty sees compliance and trust between parties as the key bottleneck in cross-border stablecoin payments, comparing it to correspondent banking.
Mastercard's Crypto Credential framework relies on common standards and assurance signals to add certainty to blockchain-related transactions. The partners will look specifically for governance signals that can lower operational friction in cross-border stablecoin flows.
The pilot builds on Mastercard's recent expansion in the stablecoin industry, including its acquisition of BVNK and plans to expand settlement capabilities to include intraday, weekend, and holiday card settlement through stablecoins such as USDC, PYUSD, USDG, USDP, RLUSD, and SoFiUSD.
