Mastercard Backs XRP Ledger Hackathon Ahead of Swell Conference
Mastercard is teaming up with XRPL Commons and the XRP Ledger Foundation to sponsor the upcoming New York XRP Ledger Hackathon, set for October 24-25, 2026. The event will run for 36 hours straight and feature four competition tracks, each focusing on a different aspect of the XRP ledger: Protocol Innovation, Agentic Finance, Lending and Borrowing, and 'Why Not.'
The hackathon's slot on the calendar coincides with Ripple's Swell conference, which takes place from October 27-29 at The Shed in Manhattan. Mastercard's sponsorship is significant, as it signals the company's growing interest in blockchain infrastructure and its potential applications.
Ahead of the main event, a core developer bootcamp will take place from October 20-22, targeting C++ developers who want to get up to speed on the rippled codebase. The event organizers have also announced that Ledger is putting up $10,000 in hardware wallet bounties, split across various categories.
The hackathon's focus on lending and borrowing protocols could have implications for Web3 gaming, as these mechanisms underpin guild financing and treasury management, foundational aspects of how gaming ecosystems operate. Agentic Finance, one of the competition tracks, is particularly relevant to gaming, as autonomous agents already handle transactions and interactions at scale in many on-chain games.
