Mastercard, Borderless Team Up to Streamline Cross-Border Stablecoin Payments
Mastercard and stablecoin payments infrastructure firm Borderless are teaming up on a pilot project to improve trust and verification systems for cross-border stablecoin remittances.
The collaboration focuses on testing whether Mastercard's crypto remittance authentication service, Crypto Credential, can provide the approval, compliance, and risk-management signals needed for cross-border stablecoin payments.
Borderless co-founder and CEO Kevin Lehtiniity noted that correspondent banks solved compliance issues decades ago by verifying at the remittance stage. He added that once compliance is verified, participants trust it afterward and do not repeat the same process for each transaction.
The pilot will explore new governance signals to reduce friction in cross-border stablecoin payments. Mastercard will not directly handle fund processing or settlement.
