Mastercard Doubles Down on Stablecoins with Expanded Integration
Mastercard, one of the world's largest card payment service companies, has been making significant strides in stablecoins over the past five years. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to a stable fiat currency, such as the U.S. dollar or the Euro.
Their payments can be settled 24/7, 365 days a year, without any concerns regarding banking hours or holidays. This has led Mastercard to integrate stablecoin settlements into its own framework, which protects its customers with the same fraud checks and dispute-resolution tools as its card-payments network.
Mastercard's push into stablecoins began in 2021 when it joined a pilot program to test Circle's USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin for settling financial transactions. Since then, it has launched a full suite of stablecoin settlement tools, launched crypto-linked cards, and facilitated on-chain remittances.
The company has also deepened its partnership with Circle to bring USDC and EURC stablecoin settlements to more countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It acquired the enterprise stablecoin infrastructure platform BVNK in August to bolster its cross-border payment pipelines.
