Mastercard Taps Crypto Credential in Cross-Border Stablecoin Payments Pilot
Mastercard and Borderless.xyz are teaming up to test the use of Mastercard's Crypto Credential in cross-border stablecoin payments.
The pilot, which started on Wednesday with live transactions, aims to reduce the compliance verification process for stablecoin payment operators. According to Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO and co-founder of Borderless.xyz, one of the biggest friction points for these operators is that compliance doesn't scale the same way as the network.
The pilot will test whether compliance checks performed once at origination can be relied on across Borderless.xyz's network of stablecoin payment providers. The three participants joining the pilot, Infinia, Walapay and Koywe, will run on what the companies call a single-audit compliance model at network scale.
The Mastercard Crypto Credential is meant to supply standardized assurance signals that other participants can plug into their own approval and risk processes instead of re-running checks. Lehtiniitty said it's like correspondent banking, where originating compliance is trusted downstream without re-execution at every counterparty.
