Mastercard Wins NYC License for Direct Stablecoin Settlement
Mastercard has taken another step forward in its push to integrate stablecoins into its network. After securing a virtual asset business license in New York state, the company can now directly settle stablecoin transactions.
This marks an important milestone for Mastercard's efforts to expand its scope and move closer to on-chain finance. According to Sherri Haymond, Executive Vice President of Digital Partnerships at Mastercard, the company's ability to process stablecoin settlement directly is a result of obtaining the BitLicense.
Before securing the U.S. license, Mastercard had already completed stablecoin settlement trials abroad, including with Colombian fintech firm dollarapp and in Brazil and Colombia. The company plans to support euro-based stablecoins within this year.
The move is part of a broader strategy by Mastercard to build the AI payments market into a next-generation growth engine. Haymond explained that under a 'multi-rail, multi-coin' strategy, Mastercard connects various blockchains and stablecoins rather than relying on any single stablecoin.
