Mastercard's Multi-Chain Plan Leaves XRP Ledger in the Shadows
Ripple's XRP Ledger has been touted as a significant institutional win after Mastercard announced its support for stablecoin settlement on the network. However, a closer look at the announcement reveals that XRPL is one of eight networks Mastercard plans to support, along with regulated stablecoins from various issuers.
The supported assets include Circle's USDC, PayPal's PYUSD, Paxos' USDG and USDP, Ripple's RLUSD, and SoFiUSD. This means that Mastercard has not selected XRPL as its preferred blockchain infrastructure, but rather is building a multi-chain settlement architecture where financial institutions can choose among several networks and regulated stablecoins.
Ripple's combination of Mastercard support with its regulated stablecoin strategy provides a stronger institutional argument for XRPL. The network's advantage lies in its low transaction costs, rapid settlement, and built-in financial functionality, which is being leveraged by institutions such as Gemini, WebBank, and Mastercard.
