Matter Labs Releases Prividium Permissioning Engine as Open-Source Code
Matter Labs, the company behind the ZKsync platform, has released the permissioning engine of its DLT platform Prividium as open-source. This move allows any institution to run, inspect, and modify the core code from their own environment without relying on a commercial vendor. The Deutsche Bundesbank is the first institution to test and deploy the open-source permissioning engine within its own infrastructure.
The decision to release the permissioning engine as open-source was made in response to demand from regulated institutions. Alex Gluchowski, CEO of Matter Labs, explained that the most consistent feedback received from regulated institutions indicated that an exclusively commercial core created an unacceptable single-vendor dependency for critical infrastructure.
The Prividium platform uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify the correctness of operations and keeps smart contract and token data within the operator's environment. Several components of the platform were already open-source beforehand, including the ZKsync OS core, the Atlas sequencer, and the interoperability contracts.
Matter Labs will continue collaborating with the German central bank on the design and testing of the platform. The permissioning engine can function as a standalone component, allowing an institution to operate a permissioned chain from public code without needing to establish a commercial agreement.
