Measuring Decentralization Across Leading Blockchains Reveals Unique Strengths and Weaknesses
Decentralization is often touted as one of the key benefits of blockchain technology, but it's a term that's notoriously difficult to define. A recent paper from ARK Invest and Glassnode attempts to measure decentralization across leading blockchains by examining how each network distributes verification, block production, governance, infrastructure, and ownership.
The study finds that Bitcoin prioritizes inexpensive verification and geographic resilience, making it more accessible for individuals to verify the supply, transaction history, and consensus rules for themselves. This accessibility reinforces Bitcoin's monetary policy, as independent participants enforce the same rules and would reject incompatible changes.
Ethereum, on the other hand, balances distribution with programmability, but its smart contracts increase the computational burden of verification. The transition to proof-of-stake introduced a concentration risk, making it easier for smaller investors to use while relying more heavily on shared infrastructure.
Solana takes a performance-first approach, with a parallel processing architecture that can handle far more activity than Bitcoin's base layer. However, this comes at the cost of substantial infrastructure requirements and reduced direct participation among users.
