Meme Coin Market Sees Slowdown Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The meme coin market experienced a slowdown this week due to geopolitical turbulence, but some tokens tied to trending global narratives managed to break out. Trading volumes on Solana's top meme coin launchpads fell by more than 50% from January highs, according to Dune Analytics.
Despite the decline, Pump.fun signaled its commitment to growth through app expansion. The platform now supports trading for tokens launched on other launchpads, alongside a set of larger assets, making it an all-purpose on-chain trading hub. This move reflects Pump.fun's push to bundle launches, discovery, and trading into a single interface.
Some meme coins underperformed the broader crypto market this week. Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and Pepe (PEPE) fell roughly 4%, 8%, and 12% respectively, while Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) rose about 6.75% and 2.75%.
Despite the sector-wide slowdown, select meme coins tied to trending geopolitical headlines rallied sharply. WAR (WAR) climbed from less than $7 million in market cap on Feb. 28 to around $30 million as of March 3, while OLIO (OIL) jumped from under $2 million on Feb. 24 to as high as roughly $5 million on March 4.
