Meme Coin Market Sees Surge in Activity Amid Broader Crypto Weakness
The meme coin market has seen a surge in activity after months of fading interest. Large-cap meme coins like Dogecoin (DOGE) are experiencing rising open interest, with perpetual futures volume up to 14.74 billion DOGE on July 20, according to CoinGlass data.
This increased positioning has yet to translate into sustained price gains for DOGE, which was trading at around $0.069 on July 23, still below its 50-day exponential moving average. Token Talk, a crypto market analyst, noted that 'bulls need to reclaim key resistance before any sustained recovery can begin.'
Rising open interest in Shiba Inu (SHIB) has also been observed, reaching nearly 8 trillion SHIB after falling to roughly 5 trillion in late June. However, the broader crypto market remains weak, with the total meme coin market cap down nearly 20% over the past month.
The emergence of Robinhood Chain as a hub for meme coin trading has been particularly notable, with Cash Cat (CASHCAT) surging more than 2,000% over seven days through July 13. This surge has been attributed to the attention and speculation surrounding the platform, but it remains unclear whether this signals lasting demand or an initial burst of speculation that will fade as the network matures.
