Meme-Stock-Token Volumes Surge on Robinhood Chain

Rising trading volumes on Robinhood's blockchain, known as Robinhood Chain, have raised concerns about market integrity and regulatory exposure. On September 2, memecoins paired against tokenized stocks generated $217 million in volume, outpacing the $127 million traded through direct stock token markets.

Traders are using tokenized shares of Nvidia or Hims & Hers as the basis for meme-token economies that Robinhood never designed. The company describes its stock tokens as ERC-20 tokenized debt securities that provide economic exposure to an underlying stock without granting legal or beneficial ownership in the issuer.

New supply of these tokens comes from a single authorized participant, BBVI, which alone can mint tokens once onboarded. Everyone else trades, pools, and builds with the existing tokens, permissionlessly and without Robinhood's direct involvement.
