Meta and PH Government Unite Against Online Violence
The Philippine government and Meta have reached an agreement to establish a rapid-response system for content moderation on Facebook, shelving plans for a nationwide ban. The deal comes after tensions rose between regulators and Meta over delays in removing violent content during a campus shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
Under the new pact, Meta will assign a dedicated point of contact for Philippine authorities and launch a joint Technical Working Group (TWG) with state regulators. The TWG will focus on immediate coordination, faster response times, and rapid content removal for posts involving threats of violence, disinformation, and child sexual abuse material.
The agreement was forged during a high-level meeting convened by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., led by Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda. Meta executives are set to visit Manila soon to formalize the cooperation framework.
