Meta Deploys Robots to Automate Data Center Work Amid Labor Shortage Fears
Meta is testing robots to automate data center work, including tasks such as swapping cables and restarting servers. The company has partnered with several robotics firms, including Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB, to develop machines that can perform routine maintenance tasks.
According to an unnamed Meta employee, a successful cable-swapping robot could replace up to 80% of the work performed in certain roles. However, the machines are currently slow and require human assistance to operate effectively.
Nvidia and Alibaba are also working on improving robot training systems, with Nvidia researchers introducing AI agents that can train robot fleets and Alibaba unveiling its Qwen-Robot Suite for tasks such as navigation and object handling.
Industry experts predict that embodied AI could have a significant impact by the end of 2027, but workers fear that automation may reduce demand for experienced technicians and shift remaining tasks to lower-paid employees following AI-generated instructions.
