The tokenization of metals is gaining momentum in the blockchain industry. Companies are integrating gold, copper, uranium, nickel, and cobalt into their systems to attract crypto investors and provide easier access to physical metals for retail investors.

This trend allows for alternative financing mechanisms for mining projects and diversification opportunities for digital capital. The process aligns with ConsenSys CEO Joseph Lubin's forecast of a gradual full tokenization of the global economy.

The market for tokenized metals still lags behind traditional instruments in scale, according to the World Gold Council. For example, gold ETFs have a total value of around $530 billion, while gold-backed tokens such as Tether Gold and Pax Gold have market capitalizations of $2.7 billion and $1.9 billion respectively.

Proponents believe that blockchain can simplify access to commodity assets. The platform Metals.io has already issued tokens linked to uranium, nickel, and cobalt, which under certain conditions can be exchanged for physical metal. Ben Elvidge, head of alternative assets at Trilitech, emphasizes that such tools provide 'direct access to commodity assets without the costs and complexities of futures.'

The development of tokenized real-world asset segment is occurring against the backdrop of overall market growth. According to a joint analysis by CoinShares and Token Terminal, the total market capitalization of tokenized RWAs has already exceeded $43 billion.
