MetaMask Breaks Away from Consensys
Consensys Software Inc., the company behind MetaMask, is undergoing a significant restructuring. The consumer and institutional businesses will be split, with the existing company rebranding as MetaMask, led by Consensys co-founder Joe Lubin as chairman and CEO.
The new Consensys will take over Ethereum protocols and institutional blockchain infrastructure, focusing on blockchain infrastructure for banks, asset managers, payment providers, and other financial institutions. This split is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
MetaMask has expanded beyond storing and trading crypto, launching Money Account, a self-custody feature that combines stablecoin yield, payments, and trading in a single balance. The wallet now boasts over 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries and has facilitated trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume.
