MetaMask Breaks Free as Consensys Splits in Two
Consensys Software Inc., the company behind MetaMask, is undergoing a major restructuring. The company will split into two separate entities: MetaMask and Consensys. MetaMask, led by Joe Lubin as chairman and CEO, will continue to focus on consumer-facing products, while Consensys, led by Mike Kriak with David Cunningham as president, will handle the protocols and institutional infrastructure business.
MetaMask has over 100 million downloads across approximately 190 countries and has cumulatively processed trillions of dollars in transactions. The company's rebranding to MetaMask reflects its focus on consumer self-custody, which is expected to drive growth through swap fees.
The new Consensys will inherit the Linea Layer 2 network, Besu Ethereum execution client, and Teku consensus client. Cunningham emphasized that the target for this entity is interoperability infrastructure for financial marketplaces moving towards tokenization-based operations.
