MetaMask Breaks Free from Consensys Infrastructure Arm
Consensys Software Inc. is splitting into two independently operated companies by the end of 2026. The separation will create two distinct businesses, one focused on Ethereum infrastructure and institutional operations, while the other will be a consumer-facing business led by MetaMask.
The existing company will retain the Consensys name under CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham, with Joe Lubin as executive chairman. A newly formed company will be rebranded as MetaMask, with Lubin as chairman and CEO.
Moving forward, MetaMask will focus on self-custodial consumer finance, including payments, savings, investing, and trading. The expansion is expected to make it a full financial application rather than a tool used primarily for storing tokens and connecting to decentralized applications.
