MetaMask Breaks Free from Consensys to Focus on Consumer Financial Services
MetaMask, owned by Consensys Software Inc., is breaking away from its parent company to focus on consumer financial services. The move marks a significant shift for MetaMask beyond its identity as a crypto wallet.
The new entity will prioritize self-custody, payments, trading, and other financial services, aiming to build an 'Open Money' platform that lets users hold, spend, save, and grow assets while retaining control over their digital assets.
MetaMask has already reached 100 million downloads worldwide across approximately 190 countries, with trillions of dollars worth of transactions processed. The company is expanding through its Money Account feature, a mix of self-custodial assets and spending, earning, and trading capabilities.
The separation does not affect users who already use MetaMask, as their apps, assets, keys, and access remain unaffected. This allows the new entity to build financial and crypto products on-chain while avoiding institutional structures.
