MetaMask Leads Split from Consensys as Institutional Focus Shifts
Consensys Software Inc., the company behind Ethereum-focused MetaMask, plans to split into two standalone businesses. The consumer-oriented MetaMask platform will be led by Joe Lubin as chairman and CEO of the new company, while the remaining Consensys entity will focus on Ethereum protocols and institutional infrastructure.
The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, allowing each business line to pursue distinct strategies without internal tradeoffs. MetaMask will continue to expand its role beyond a browser extension, adding products that interact with mainstream financial activities such as payments, yield, and tokenized traditional assets.
The new institutional Consensys will concentrate on Ethereum infrastructure and enterprise adoption, including tokenization and stablecoin-related services. Linea, Besu, and Teku are among the protocols and tools that will be housed in the reorganized entity.
