MetaMask Seizes Opportunity as Phantom Abandons Monad Support
Phantom announced it would stop supporting Monad, effective August 26. This move surprised the community because Phantom's exit was not without notice or reason.
The team behind Phantom provided a detailed plan for users to safely withdraw their assets before the cutoff date. Users can import their recovery phrase into any compatible wallet or swap directly to wrapped MON on Solana from within Phantom itself.
Despite this user-protective exit, some saw it as an opportunity for MetaMask to poach Monad's users. The MetaMask team responded quickly with a post stating they would cover gas fees for users interacting with Monad through their wallet.
This move was seen as a competitive play by some, but others pointed out that the change in wallets is not necessarily a negative outcome for Monad's user base. In fact, multiple other wallets have been supporting Monad natively, including Ambire Wallet and Trust Wallet.
