MetaMask Spins Off From Parent Company to Focus on Consumer Business
Consensys Software Inc. will continue to operate under the MetaMask brand, overseeing the wallet's platform and consumer products. On the other hand, Consensys will take over the protocol development team and institutional blockchain infrastructure business. The transfer includes several notable projects like Linea, a Layer 2 solution for Ethereum, as well as the Besu, Teku software suites. This separation is part of Consensys' strategy to adapt to changing market conditions, including the growing adoption of self-custody wallets and the increasing use of blockchain by financial institutions.
MetaMask's CEO and co-founder Joseph Lubin will lead both companies. In a recent blog post, he explained that MetaMask aims to create an 'Open Money' system where users can manage their assets independently. This vision is reflected in its new product, the MetaMask Money Account, which allows users to exchange their deposited funds for the stablecoin mUSD and invest them through DeFi platforms.
The rebranding of Consensys Software Inc. as MetaMask is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with no changes in user access or operations required during this transition.
