Metaplanet and Hut8 Combine for $125 Million Bitcoin Exit from Exchanges
Metaplanet and Hut8 made significant moves on August 12, withdrawing a combined 1,966 BTC (worth approximately $125 million) from exchanges within a three-hour window. Metaplanet led the charge with a withdrawal of 1,473 BTC ($93.82 million), followed by Hut8's 493 BTC ($31.36 million) hours later.
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed firm and one of the largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries outside the US, has been accumulating Bitcoin throughout the year. Its treasury now holds over 43,000 BTC, with acquisition costs totaling near $4.09 billion, making it the third-largest public corporate Bitcoin holder as of August 2026.
Hut8, a bitcoin miner and digital infrastructure company, also moved coins out of exchange custody. The company's total holdings stand at 13,696 BTC, representing roughly 0.065% of Bitcoin's total circulating supply. Hut8 has been refocusing on non-dilutive financing for its data center buildout.
When large holders move Bitcoin away from exchanges, it is typically viewed as a bullish supply signal. However, neither company has publicly explained the specific transfers, leaving room for speculation about their intentions and destinations.
