Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Strategy with Hong Kong Subsidiary
Metaplanet is expanding its Bitcoin strategy to Asia with a new Hong Kong subsidiary. The Tokyo-listed firm has approved Metaplanet Asset Management Asia Limited, a wholly owned entity with $1 million in initial capital. This move marks a significant step in the company's broader Bitcoin expansion effort.
The Hong Kong unit will trade Bitcoin, equities, preferred securities, and credit products during Asian market hours, complementing Metaplanet's Miami-based business. Simon Gerovich, Darren Winia, and Kelvin Lee have been appointed as directors to oversee the operation initially.
Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC in its treasury and is placing 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million into Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise, soon to be renamed Superplanet. The company expects to formally incorporate the Hong Kong subsidiary by September 2026 but has not disclosed a launch date or client onboarding timeline.
The new subsidiary is part of Project Nova, Metaplanet's plan to evolve from a company that holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet into a fuller financial-services platform built around it. This move reflects a strategy popularized in the U.S. by companies that use a Bitcoin-heavy balance sheet as leverage and layer financial products on top.
