Metaplanet Issues BitBonds to Fund Bitcoin Expansion Amid $1.1 Billion Loss
Metaplanet, a Japan-listed company known for its Bitcoin treasury strategy, reported a significant first-half valuation loss of approximately $1.1 billion on its BTC holdings. The loss is primarily an accounting adjustment tied to temporary price fluctuations during the period.
The company attributed the loss to market volatility and stated that it was a non-cash accounting loss, reflecting the market value of its BTC at the reporting date.
Despite this setback, Metaplanet announced plans to expand its Bitcoin accumulation through a new funding program called BitBonds. The first issuance will be around 200 million yen with a three-year maturity and an annual interest rate of 4.0% to 4.3%.
The company aims to secure capital at a predictable cost while betting that Bitcoin's long-term appreciation will outpace the interest expense.
