Metaplanet Surges Past 250,000 Retail Shareholders Amidst Bear Market
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed firm that has pivoted from running hotels to accumulating Bitcoin, has seen its shareholder count surge by 66% in just a few months. By late June 2026, the company had over 250,000 retail shareholders, representing approximately 0.2% of Japan's population.
This is a remarkable feat considering it occurred during what most would describe as a bear market. Metaplanet's origin story is one of transformation, having ditched its hotel business in 2024 to focus on stockpiling Bitcoin.
The company now holds 40,177 BTC, making it the third-largest corporate Bitcoin holder worldwide. To finance these purchases, Metaplanet has used a combination of equity raises, zero-interest bonds, and warrants.
