Metaplanet Unveils Plan for Bitcoin-Backed Bonds with 4% to 6% Yields

Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company, is exploring the creation of bitcoin-backed bonds that could offer investors yields of 4% to 6%. This initiative, part of Project NOVA, involves Metaplanet in collaboration with JPYC, a yen-denominated stablecoin issuer, and Progmat, a tokenization platform. Analysts at Benchmark have suggested that such instruments, dubbed 'Bitbonds,' could become a new demand channel for BTC.

The concept of Bitbonds is built on Metaplanet's significant Bitcoin holdings, accumulated through strategic acquisitions. The company has 43,000 BTC, which it plans to use as collateral for the bonds. This would allow investors to receive fixed coupons backed by the value of the collateralized Bitcoin.

Japan's regulatory framework for digital securities is evolving to accommodate products like Bitbonds, giving Metaplanet a plausible runway. However, there are risks associated with using volatile assets like Bitcoin as collateral, and over-collateralization or dynamic adjustments might be necessary to mitigate these risks.
