Metaplanet Unveils Unsecured BitBonds Amid Bitcoin Volatility Concerns

Metaplanet, a Japanese company, made headlines in the crypto industry this week by unveiling four series of BitBonds. This bond program is part of Metaplanet's strategy to raise funds for its bitcoin holdings. The company raised 200 million yen (approximately $1.3 million USD) through these bonds at interest rates ranging from 4.0% to 4.3% over three years.

The bonds are unsecured, meaning they do not have collateral backing them. Instead, investors will bear the credit risk correlated with bitcoin's volatility. This is a significant concern for creditors, as Metaplanet's official prospectus acknowledges that its repayment capacity is affected by bitcoin price movements.

To put this into perspective, Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC, which it acquired at an average price of $96,191 per coin. However, the current market value of these coins is significantly lower, standing at around $63,800 per coin. This represents a latent loss of over $1.4 billion for the company.

The timing of this announcement was also unusual, as news broke out about Metaplanet transferring 5,014 BTC from its wallets. Initially, there were concerns that the company might be selling part of its bitcoin holdings, but CEO Simon Gerovich denied these rumors and announced that 'no bitcoin has been sold.'
