Metaplanet's $247M BTC Transfer Raises Questions About Company's Strategy
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed Bitcoin treasury company, transferred 3,881 BTC worth approximately $247 million across five transactions over three hours on Wednesday. The move is the second large transfer this year, following a March transaction of 4,986 BTC valued at around $368 million.
The average value per BTC for these transactions was roughly $63,700, in line with Bitcoin's trading price this week. However, Metaplanet's total Bitcoin holdings have remained stagnant since July 2, when the company last disclosed a purchase. The company's digital credit strategy aims to build around Bitcoin and digital assets.
The transfer leaves the reason for the wallet movements unclear, but sector-wide paper losses across Bitcoin treasury companies have been estimated at roughly $62 billion this year. Metaplanet has already booked significant damage, reporting a net loss of about $725 million in its fiscal first quarter due to non-cash markdowns on its Bitcoin holdings.
This move comes during a broader stretch of losses for companies holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets. Strategy, the largest corporate holder, has swung to what markets-analysis account The Kobeissi Letter called the biggest unrealized loss in the sector's history, estimated at between $10.8 billion and $14.5 billion over the past year.
