Metaplanet's Crypto Ambitions Slowed Amid Paper Loss
Metaplanet's fortunes have taken an unexpected turn this month. The Japanese firm has confirmed that it bought back no shares in July, a marked change from its aggressive crypto acquisitions last year.
This comes as one of America's largest asset managers, Capital Research and Management Company, continues to increase its stake in Metaplanet. The fund manager now holds 136,059,120 shares, up from 9.32 percent to 10.63 percent, following a disclosure on July 21 with a record date of July 13.
Metaplanet's Bitcoin buying has slowed significantly, with the company acquiring just 2,823 BTC for approximately ¥35.9 billion ($222 million) in Q2, its smallest quarterly purchase in a year. This represents a stark contrast to the 17,473 BTC amassed in Q3 2025.
The reduced pace of Bitcoin accumulation has left Metaplanet with a paper loss of around $1.5 billion, as it now holds approximately ¥409 billion ($2.5 billion) worth of coins at an average price of roughly $78,608 per unit.
