Metaplanet's Uncharacteristic Quiet: What's Behind the Lack of Activity
Metaplanet's recent disclosures have been marked by an unusual lack of activity. The company, which has made headlines in recent months for capital raises and Bitcoin acquisitions, reported no exercises of its 27th-series warrants or share repurchases under its authorized buyback program.
The slowdown is attributed to the company's options-based income engine losing steam, with second-quarter revenue from its Bitcoin Income Generation business dropping by 41 percent to 1.75 billion yen. However, management has left its full-year revenue and operating profit guidance intact, viewing this as a temporary market condition rather than a structural setback.
The company's mNAV ratio, which compares market capitalization to the value of its Bitcoin holdings, slipped to 0.90x on Friday, indicating that Metaplanet's stock trades below the raw value of its digital assets. CEO Simon Gerovich acknowledged this by stating that the firm is 'seriously considering' buybacks, funded through an existing $500 million credit line collateralized by Bitcoin.
While the company has authorized repurchases of up to 150 million shares, none were bought through July 31. Investors will be scrutinizing whether Metaplanet follows through on its plans, particularly with the stock sitting roughly 34.45 percent below its 200-day moving average and about 80 percent off its 52-week high.
