Meta's Robot Uprising Sparks Layoff Worries Amid AI System Overhaul
Meta is testing robots to maintain its AI system data centers, sparking concerns about potential layoffs. The company has been working with robotics firms like Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB to develop machines that can replace human labor in tasks such as replacing network cables, restarting servers, and inspecting equipment.
According to WIRED, the robots are still not able to perform at the speed of humans, but could potentially automate up to 80% of certain jobs. However, employees are worried that the introduction of automation will lead to a reduction in demand for experienced technical staff, with remaining work being transferred to low-wage positions operated by AI.
Meta's spokesperson disputes this claim, stating that the US is currently experiencing its largest infrastructure boom since World War II, and there is a severe shortage of skilled workers. The company needs more employees, not fewer, they argue.
The robots are still in development and require human oversight, facing challenges with obstacles, battery life, visual checks, and dense cable management. NVIDIA and Alibaba are also working on improving robot training systems.
