MEXC Leads as Cheapest Crypto Exchange for Traders, But Discounts Matter Most
Crypto traders are concerned about trading fees, which can quietly become one of the biggest line items on their account over time. Most exchanges split fees into maker and taker rates, with a resting limit order being the maker side and a market order that lifts the offer being the taker side. In a recent comparison of eight major crypto exchanges, MEXC emerged as the cheapest option, with 0% maker and 0.050% taker on spot trading, and 0% maker and 0.020% taker on futures.
Other notable exchanges include Binance, OKX, and Bybit, which offer competitive rates alongside deep liquidity and active trading markets. However, it's essential to note that the discount path is where real money is saved or lost, rather than just focusing on the headline rate. A venue with a slightly higher regular taker but a reachable discount can end up cheaper than one with a lower headline rate.
The study highlights that some exchanges gate their first discount behind a balance of assets held on the platform or a rolling 30-day trading volume, which varies enormously. For instance, BloFin requires $50,000 in account assets to unlock a lower futures rate, while Bybit asks for double that amount. In contrast, Binance and KuCoin mostly gate discounts behind trading volume.
Ultimately, the fee winner depends on the job, with different traders optimizing for different things. While MEXC may have the lowest headline fees, other exchanges offer more value in terms of range or execution quality.
