Mexican Authorities Uncover Large-Scale Crypto Mining Operation

Share

Mexican authorities have uncovered a suspected illicit cryptocurrency mining operation in the mountainous Tlaola area of Puebla state. The site, discovered near a hydroelectric facility, was seized after investigators found more than 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennas.

According to reports, authorities are examining whether the operation obtained electricity illegally from the nearby hydroelectric dam. This is not the first time such an operation has been discovered in the region, with three other similar sites found since early 2025.

The investigation highlights concerns about the use of energy-intensive crypto infrastructure by organized criminal groups. Chainalysis has previously documented the use of cryptocurrency by transnational criminal organizations, including Mexican and Colombian drug-trafficking groups.
