Mexican Cartel Funds Cryptocurrency Mining Operation via Stolen Electricity
Authorities in Mexico have discovered another clandestine cryptocurrency mining farm, this time linked to a cartel's alleged funding operations. The operation was located in Puebla state, near a hydroelectric dam, where it is believed that electricity was being stolen.
The farm, which consisted of 300 graphics processing units (GPUs) and other equipment, was discovered by police due to the excessive amount of electricity it was consuming. This is not an isolated incident, as three similar farms were found in the same area last year.
Experts believe that drug cartels are increasingly using cryptocurrency transactions and mining operations to launder money, taking advantage of the relative anonymity and accessibility of these systems.
