A 300-GPU cryptocurrency mining farm in Mexico's Puebla state has been dismantled by authorities, marking the fourth such operation near the Nuevo Necaxa dam since early 2025.
The raid, which took place in September 2026, found a fully operational mining facility tapping what investigators suspect was stolen hydroelectric power. The operation included 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennae, all geared to compete against millions of other machines to solve puzzles and create new crypto coins.
The authorities are examining whether the operators siphoned electricity from the nearby Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric complex. No specific cartel has been officially named as the operator, but the operation is described by authorities as suspected organized crime infrastructure.
This is not an isolated incident; there have been four clandestine mining farms discovered near the same dam since early 2025. The financial stakes extend well beyond a single raid, with estimates suggesting cartel crypto laundering at up to $25 billion annually.
