Mexican Cartel Uncovered Crypto Farm Stealing Electricity
Deep in Mexico's Central Mountains, a clandestine cryptocurrency farm has been uncovered, revealing a new frontier in organized crime. Authorities discovered 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennae at the facility.
The operation, suspected of laundering illicit funds, was located near a sparsely traveled gravel road in Puebla state's Sierra Norte region. The noise from the farm's machinery was audible one kilometer away, according to two local residents who wished to remain anonymous.
David Saucedo, a security analyst based in Mexico, attributes the setup of such operations to technical expertise and backing from well-financed groups like powerful cartels. This is the fourth crypto farm uncovered in the area since early last year.
