Mexican Cartels Exploit Crypto Mining to Launder Proceeds

Mexican authorities raided a clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation in Puebla, seizing hundreds of GPU chips and equipment. The raid, which took place on September 6, was carried out by federal prosecutors, the Mexican navy, and state security officers.

The hidden mine, located in Tlaola, was discovered to have about 300 GPUs, a transformer, approximately 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite internet antennas. Investigators are examining whether the crypto mined at the site was used to hide proceeds from illicit activity.

Mexico's federal attorney's office declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. Security analyst David Saucedo told Reuters that 'drug cartels appear to have reached a new level of sophistication' due to the expertise and financing required to run such a clandestine site.
