Mexican Cartels Unleash Illicit Crypto Mining Operations with Stolen Power

Mexican authorities have uncovered a massive illicit crypto mining operation in the mountainous Tlaola area of Puebla state, seizing 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennas.

The hidden mine was found to be tapping power directly from a nearby hydroelectric dam, highlighting the sophistication and technical expertise of organized crime groups in Mexico. According to security analyst David Saucedo, running an operation like this requires both expertise and significant financing, which is likely provided by major cartels.

Investigations have revealed that three similar farms were discovered last year near the same hydroelectric dam in northern Puebla, prompting local officials to work with neighboring states to identify potential hidden sites. This case is part of a broader pattern of illicit crypto mining operations being uncovered across multiple countries, where stolen power and remote terrain make it difficult to detect these farms until noise complaints are received.
